A Quieter Lakewood Neighborhood
Custer is one of Lakewood’s established residential neighborhoods — small, settled, primarily single-family with a mix of homes spanning multiple decades of construction. It’s not the most flashy part of Lakewood, but it’s the kind of place that quietly does what neighborhoods are supposed to do.
About Custer
Custer is an established residential neighborhood in central Lakewood (ZIP 98499), centered loosely around Custer Road SW. The housing stock is mostly mid-postwar through late-century — built primarily between the 1940s and the 1990s — with a mix of owner-occupied and rental homes.
The neighborhood is home to the historic “Little Red School House” (Custer School, 1932), on the National Register of Historic Places since 1987. Character is lower-middle-income, working-class, with a notably high share of active-duty military residents tied to Joint Base Lewis-McChord just down the road.
