South Tacoma is one of Tacoma’s oldest neighborhoods — built up around the rail yards in the late 1800s, working-class through the 20th century, and now in the middle of a slow-but-steady revitalization. It’s big — geographically one of Tacoma’s largest neighborhoods — and dense with single-family homes that span every decade from the 1910s onward.
The character is real. Multi-generational households, old garages full of decades of accumulated household, recent transplants buying first homes in the more affordable Tacoma neighborhoods, and the Sound Transit Sounder commuter rail running through it. Junk removal here means handling old homes with old contents, which is exactly the work we like.
About South Tacoma
The district stretches along South Tacoma Way — the former US Highway 99 / Pacific Highway corridor — originally settled as “Hunt’s Prairie” and renamed South Tacoma in 1895 after the Northern Pacific Railway built its major repair shops here in 1890. ZIP 98409, roughly 26,860 residents, median age in the early 30s. Demographically diverse, with significant Black, Asian, multiracial, and Pacific Islander populations alongside the white majority.
The built environment is mixed residential and industrial: about half single-family detached homes alongside auto shops, light industry, and one of Tacoma’s last largely intact early-20th-century commercial streetscapes. The 2025 South Tacoma Neighborhood Plan targets safety, connectivity, tree planting, and station-area improvements through the end of the decade.
