Mattresses are the worst single item to dispose of. They’re bulky, they’re heavy, they’re floppy, they won’t fit in a sedan, and most curbside services flat-out won’t take them. Here are your real options in Pierce County:
1. Mattress Recycling
Some Pierce County recyclers will accept old mattresses for component recycling (steel springs, foam, fabric). Tipping fees apply. You’ll need to haul.
2. Sell It (For Working / Newer Mattresses)
Facebook Marketplace works for relatively new, lightly-used mattresses. Be honest about condition. Expect for a queen in good shape.
3. The Manufacturer Take-Back
If you’re buying a new mattress, most retailers (online and in-store) will haul away the old one. Confirm at purchase.
4. Call Hoss
Hauling happens mattresses across Tacoma and Pierce County, single or multi. We responsibly disposed. When possible, transfer station when not. ** for a single mattress on a quarter-truck.** Bundle it with other items for better volume pricing.
What NOT to Do
- Don’t dump it. Illegal dumping in Washington has real penalties ( in many cases).
- Don’t put it at the curb. Pierce County contracted haulers won’t take it; it’ll sit.
- Don’t burn it. PNW burn bans, plus it’s a hazardous fire.
