Renting a dumpster is straightforward, but there are a few regulations and safety practices worth knowing. Here’s a quick guide for Tacoma and Pierce County customers.
Local Regulations for Dumpster Rental
On private property: No permit needed. Drop the bin on your driveway, parking lot, or yard.
On the street or right-of-way: Pierce County (and most cities) require a temporary placement permit. Cost is usually nominal. We can advise on whether your situation needs one; if it does, you’ll typically apply through your city’s public works department.
HOAs: Some HOAs have rules about commercial vehicles, dumpster placement, or visible time limits. Check before booking if you’re in an HOA-managed area.
Different Types of Dumpsters
- Open-top roll-offs — what we rent. Drop on a flatbed, fill from the top or rear swing-doors.
- Front-load (commercial) — what businesses use for weekly service. We don’t rent these.
- Compactors — high-volume commercial. Out of our scope.
Safety Practices
Wear protective gear
Gloves, eye protection, sturdy shoes. The first cut from a hidden nail in a tear-off pile ruins the weekend.
Don’t overload
Never fill above the rim. Overweight loads can shift dangerously during transport.
Keep kids and pets away
The bin’s not a playground. Items can fall, edges can cut, things can collapse.
Hazardous material
Don’t put paint, oil, propane tanks, batteries, tires, refrigerant-bearing appliances, or asbestos in the bin. We can’t take it, the disposal site can’t accept it, and you’ll pay for the rejection.
Environmental rules
Pierce County and Washington State have rules about specific materials. When in doubt, ask — we’ll tell you straight whether the bin’s the right call.
Properly Disposing of Trash in Your Dumpster
- Mix heavy and light. Don’t fill an entire bin with concrete or roofing.
- Distribute weight evenly. Heaviest on the bottom and toward the cab side.
- Don’t pack a single corner. Balance is what lets the driver lift the bin safely.
Choosing the Right Dumpster Company
A few questions worth asking any dumpster company:
- Are prices flat-rate and posted, or do they tack on weight/fuel/distance fees?
- Are they local?
- Are they licensed and insured?
- What’s their pickup window?
- What aren’t they allowed to take?
(Our answers, for the record: flat-rate posted, yes local, yes insured, 5 days standard with flexible extension, no hazardous waste.)
